there is no finish line August 11, 2008

Emily recently posted about her life long love of running.  I read that post while I was in bootcamp, and hence running (albeit only briefly) in the morning.

I’ll be honest – I hate running.   It’s always been painful and I have no endurance. It’s difficult to breathe.  But I think these are mental blocks that runners push through eventually.

Running has its benefits – it’s cheap, easy, and can be as quick or time-consuming as you want it to be. You can run with friends or by yourself.  You can do it anywhere in the world, you just need a pair of shoes (or not, if you’re near a beach).

Next year, I’ll be in an entirely new location.  Maybe there won’t be a gym nearby.  Maybe I won’t find a yoga studio.  Maybe I’ll have to hang up my climbing shoes for 10 months.

So, running seems an ideal sport.  Coupled with my newly created habit of early rising (which I will refine even further), I can easily lace up some shoes and run a few miles each morning.  I could even join Hash House Harriers.

But – first I have to train here.  Because as I said, I’m not a runner.  Last time I tried, I got shin splints and pain for my efforts.  But with bootcamp recently, I thought I’d give it another go.  It wasn’t so bad.

The real test came this past Wednesday.  I hopped on the treadmill at work and set off.  30 minutes later, I’d run/speedwalked my way to 2 miles.  That is not so bad.  I’m definitely a beginner – the longest I can sustain is 5mph for just over half a mile.  But, it’s a good start.  I just need to keep it up.

I didn’t find my “zone” but I suspect that comes with time.  First I have to push through the mental blocks.

Oh this makes my stomach turn. I promised in 2009 I’d learn to run properly, join a group etc but the very thought makes me ill :0(

I like brisk walking though!!

Haha! Bootcamp = pseudo-military-style workout class (usually meets every morning). I was a naughty teenager though! :)

I was wondering why YOU were in bootcamp too!! :)

Hey, that’s one thing about running – it’s not always fun, it’s not always easy, but you can take it with you wherever you go!

Good luck! It will get easier!

@ Emily – Thanks! I hope it does get easier. Right now it kind of makes me nauseous. :)

I don’t think I’d like either of those bootcamps…man do people actually pay to do that???

I love exercising, don’t get me wrong, but not by someone forcing or shouting and pretty much like exercise that is one with nature.

Man, bootcamp, who would have thought!!

Yeah, I need someone to yell at me, or I’d never be motivated. :)

But that being said, this was “blissful bootcamp” at my yoga studio. There was some running, and then yoga, which incorporated strength training and abwork. So, no shouting. :)
